Somehow, somewhere, at some point in your life, you’ve been told that there’s a box, that there’s a right and wrong way to go about things, that there are right and wrong things to desire, want, love, wish and hope for. The infinite freedom of your being at the beginning when you enter this world, the explosion of energy you could be has been tapered down to fit into the predesigned confines of the box that is supposed to make you proper, right, straight, accepted and approved of by the majority. You’re allowed to slowly crackle and emit heat like a sleepy coal nugget and have the preapproved dreams and desires that fit into your cultural or social frame. This is not all bad in itself because the premade structure of the box, that keeps reproducing itself through generations, offers something in return for your obedience – it offers acceptance and protection among all others that subscribe to the same box.
The process of being boxed with a bow on it, as an acceptable package, may have been quick and an isolated event that made you complacent or it might have been drawn up over a period of time where you noticed that things run more smoothly if you nod and smile, regardless if your most inner self agrees with the situation or not. You learned to lie through your teeth to get what you want playing this board game and called it diplomacy, when it is in fact manipulation. You learned to say fake I love you-s because your brand of love might be too weird. You might have choosen a “safe” career which you hate and call it “smart” or “practical”. Chasing what makes you happy might be a luxury which you don’t have at some points of life because you have to carry the load of the responsibilities you’ve taken on. That is all right, as long as you keep the fire burning at the background and understand that chasing what is meaningful (TO YOU) is not a luxury but a necessity which, if not met, will leave you a ruined hungry soul. There are no permanent boxes. There is no box that can hold a story of a lifetime. This box is just a visual representation of the least common denominator – which does not make it right or justify it’s existence, because the masses can be manipulated more easily than the individual.
Did the best ideas you ever had happen while you were leaning on the box’s vision obstructing sides or in periods of solitude and free association that doesn’t recognize the existence of boxes? There is no box. There is an illusion of the box which you’re free to believe or not and according to that belief decide what is or is not possible for you. Anything new you’re doing while you’re trying to grow and learn you’ll have to be inconvenienced as well as inconvenience the least common denominator. You’ll have to sacrifice the approval and protection of the group and structure that protects you only as long as you abide to its rules. Not recognizing the box is lonely work, but if you do it right it might just justify the existence as a free being. Make of your life what you will. You owe no one explanations or penance for what you truly want to make of your journey. Your circle will first shrink and then expand as you get better at pinpointing where it is you want to go and find people who, just as you, created their own space – shapeless, formless and ever changing space of movement and active participance that doesn’t sacrifice the sovereignty of the individual soul to accommodate made up games. There is no box to close you off.
