Curiosity might repeatedly kill the hypothetical cat in this tidbit of fearing the new thinly vailed as fake wisdom. Yes indeed, cats that are curious about rotating tires of a moving car do tend to expire prematurely, but curiosity in all other areas made them one of the most well adapted and agile hunters the planet ever produced. So no, curiosity doesn’t kill cats, stupid curiosity kills cats.

We are all one seemingly coherent personality in actuality governed by so many subsets of individual separate personalities each pulling in the tug of war to get some face time for its own interests -as it should be if you’ve decided to live this life fully and with rich openness to experience. Your interests are here for a reason; they are a guide light, a beacon that shows the way in a world filled with so much information that it is effortless to drown in it and fall silent and passive. What is it you can do for hours and it never loses its luster – is it cooking, singing, studying, writing, taking to people, moving your body, knitting, cataloguing flora and fauna? There is something there, an instinct pointing you to who you could be if all of your potentials became fully actualized. It doesn’t matter if you want to build a farm or create a new product that responds to certain need, if you want to learn coding or pubic speaking – put yourself on a collision course with your interest and feel it out, read on it, take a course, investigate, go deeper into the matter. Once you go in, the interest may weaken and you’ll get it out of your system or it may grow and reveal itself as a real path, you don’t choose your interests, they choose you!

In Jungian psychology there is this exact same idea called circumambulation meaning your interest are circling and circling around something important, they drive something inside you need to discover and they are the instinct of future self-realization that needs a way to manifest itself in reality now as a railroad to getting where your higher self is trying to make you go. What better way to show you the way than to manipulate the greatest resource you have – attention. There is nothing esoteric in this, it is natural and biological that your interest might lean towards what would most expand you as a well-rounded and coherently put together person in order that the world and your efforts in it make sense – to you. It means there is something more you have to give and if you don’t give it the whole community is at a loss because they never received your special gift. interest is a messenger caring notes from a future self.

You may be sniffing around the center of your interests pretty well, circumambulating around it and trying to find a sweet spot that hyper charges your development in a certain direction or you might be miles away from it. It doesn’t matter, you’re still here so there is still time to find it. This is not to say you should only do what you feel like doing, that is a recipe for disaster, but don’t suffocate your interest with the mountains of “have to do”, get some “want to do ” in it as well. There is no need to quit your job just yet. Stay away from the spinning wheels and do it intelligently while you figure it out.
