Contrary to your belief, if you’ve never died into a moment, you have no idea who you are. The lies we tell ourselves in our carefully constructed narratives of personhood are persistent and hard to break through. We lie best to ourselves in order to keep the illusion going – it must continue, it must!
You didn’t come here with fear or ego, you came here unaware you were separate from all else fearing nothing. Outside of a few evolutionary beneficial fears to keep your body alive, most fears are acquired through life, they are programmed in and those fears become a means of building an ego. You’ll construct this persona to protect yourself from learned fears of rejection, heartache, disappointment, loss… you’ll erect it, paint it all up and push it to stand in front of the soft real you and ease the blows of inevitable wrongs in life – never ever surrendering completely again, never flowing free and unrestrained because safe and boring is better than risk and the unknown?
If you want to be more you’ll need to get over this, not just stand at the edge of an abys but hurl yourself over. What you’ll find at the bottom is completely up to you. You will need to die to what you were, you will need to slay the ego on the way down – rigid things break, soft things bend. You’ll need to revert back into humbleness of being a constant student of life. You don’t suffer because life is hard, you suffer because the ego is trying to protect and solidify the things that needn’t be protected. Steve Jobs said it best: “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked.”
So die, die into the moments of your days, don’t come holding on to the desired outcome to hard, don’t come with prejudices of how it is supposed to be, clutching the scenario you want until your fists turn blue. Let go! Whatever comes comes – you have nothing to protect, hide or hold. You’re already naked, we’re all already naked.
