This is it. This is the final bottom line of being alive – finding balance between order and chaos, because both constitute the world, both constitute you. Order keeps life going with an unshakeable pattern of continuing on what works and chaos and mutability prevent decay and stagnation that would have eradicated the species long ago if it had remained stale and inelastic, unable to cope with the new.
As the professor of psychology and clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson states: “what it is that we’re biologically adapted to is the reality”. It has to be because nature and biology are in the business of life and if you make a wrong enough assumption, you’re done, you’re gone. Nature is that what selects – that is its best definition, Darwinian but the best and most operable one we have on a practical level of staying alive. So what nature does is it takes the real and the organism that’s been thrust in it and provides the organism with all it needs to survive and thrive (if the conditions are favorable and there are no pathological changes) so it would be wise to take from this the notion that – if it has been given to you in the starter package, the default model, you most likely need it. Some mutations show unnecessary or subpar over time and are slowly weeded out as the species evolves, but what stays has been proven useful.
For a very long time scientists tried to find a satisfying explanation as to why our brain is structured in two hemispheres. Why not just one big brain which wouldn’t have to employ the overtime work of corpus callosum (the area in between that connects the two hemispheres) to help them communicate. Why two? It has long been believed that the reason was that one (left) was verbal and the other (right) dealt in images and concepts and the non-verbal. This is true to a point but it is neither the whole truth nor the most important part of it because animals with no language capability also have a brain structured as this duality. It cannot be the only truth. It is deeper. the reason why you’re split in such a away is because the world is split into order and chaos and you were built to detect and operate within both, as a fail safe mechanisms that talk to each other in order to make you equally be able to learn and continue on doing the necessary repetitive behaviors you need to do and to be able to expand and face the unpredictability of infinite crossroads of chance as well. You’re a dual processor because you need to be. Nature does not waste energy on things that are not necessary. You have opposable thumbs for a reason; you have a large number of joints in your body and not just a few rigid bones for a reason; you have DMT present in your brain already for a reason… In the long-term span of development there are no coincidences and mutations by large fail once a proper optimal structure is established for that environment. Dr. Elkhonon Goldberg, a neuropsychologist and cognitive neuroscientist, is one of the first that definitely postulated the claim that we are built as bi-hemispheric to be able to deal with familiarity and unfamiliarity, with routinized action and be able to grasp new ones.
You’re not just order, you’re not just chaos, You’re both. You’re order animated and made better by the chaos, and chaos kept grounded by order and necessity for it to be so. You’re a blueprint of the universe, wild and tame, ordered and erratic simultaneously. You’re a microcosm that can handle it all. The next time you feel like you can’t carry something remember you were built to be able to do exactly that.
