There is nothing wrong in not being domesticated and refusing to be fully enculturated. There is a blessing and freedom in being a “misfit”. It is your most pervasive power and life shaping characteristic. Life cannot be an off-the-rack all-inclusive package. These sorts of tours are always limiting, a safe “fake travels” in which you never really explored outside of the confines of your own culture, your group, your bus, itinerary and never let go of the skirt of the tour guide. This life is free and beautiful, much too beautiful to have it ready made for you.
It is natural to be enculturated to a degree in the process of growing up, to learn what actions, beliefs and desires are preferable in the place your genetic lottery made you be born. These circumstances you cannot chose, but you can chose to not become just the least common denominator of the most standard things you’ve been exposed to. You can choose to not be mediocre and to consciously search for spaces outside of the statistics. Sure, it is comfortable and calming to be “the same” and accepted. It is comfortable to accept the average and surround yourself with it. Mediocrity is like a good old glove in which you are encouraged to never push further and we like to feel secure, we like to feel as if we’ve arrived and can now rest. But getting too comfortable means no challenges, it means you’re not doing anything new, you’re not going outside of the comfort zone and you’ve been fully civilized – that’s the mediocrity of life. Now you are nice, you are proper, you say proper things and you are docile. Feeling good, comfortable and safe is great, feeling protected is one of the most wonderful feelings ever and the benefit of a society is that it will give you this – but only under the condition that you don’t rock the boat and keep your crayons inside the predesigned lines. Outside the lines the space is unpredictable
If you choose to remain civilized that is ok, you have complete right to do so and maybe this is what you need now, some stability. But there will come times in life where you’ll need to break the bonds, let go of the safety rope, break some “rules” and become a complete savage. There will be times when love, a dream, a mission, a deep desire yearning and searching cannot be gained without the risk only a savage would take. Reason is wonderful to a degree, but don’t be afraid to be completely unreasonable if you feel something else is out there you need to do, see or accomplish. Don’t get to civilized and compliant, nurture the potentiality to become a mad (wo)man if necessary. Keep your eyes on the well established road to not lose sight of the parameters of reality. There are things to learn and cherish there of course, but every now and then break free, take the scenic route. You have no idea what is waiting in the unexplored. Take a chance.
Become a wild (wo)man, a peg that doesn’t fit, a willing outcast, a rebelled soul against what is not good, useful, kind and true. Become a savage.
